ANALYSIS

I s’pose no news is good news for my D-RODs. They finished Christmas tied 4-4 with the Ames Black Falcons and find themselves in the same deadlock heading into the weekend.

I must say, though, I’m thankful for Chris Paul—which is a tough thing for me to say, since I’m a Los Angeles Lakers fan by birth and was devastated when “basketball reasons” became a thing. On this night, at least, CP3 made up for it by making Damian Lillard work hard on both ends, to the point that the reigning Rookie of the Year finished with a modest 14 points, five rebounds and four assists in the Portland Trail Blazers‘ thrilling overtime win against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Will my D-RODs hold the fort tonight? Might they even make some headway in, say, steals? Or will Grant Rindner’s squad gain on mine in the few places where it’s holding strong?

ANALYSIS

Frankly, I like my chances at a decent night on Friday. All of my top performers, save for Joakim Noah, are in action tonight. As productive as Arron Afflalo, Al Jefferson and Harrison Barnes have been for the Black Falcons, they’re still nobody’s idea of world-beaters.

But before I dig myself a deeper karmic hole, I’m going to bite my tongue and let the games play out. Check back tomorrow to see how my D-RODs fared!

The Results, 12/23/2013 + A Quiet Christmas Eve

Christmas in the post-War United States

The NBA is on hiatus today while folks across the country—fans, players, coaches, executives and everyone in between—gather with their families to guzzle eggnog, wear ugly sweaters and feel embarrassed by their family friends and relatives all over again, just a month after Thanksgiving.

Or not. To be honest, I don’t really know. My family was always more into Hanukkah (because, you know, we’re Jewish and whatnot), so my experience with Christmas Eve celebrations is somewhat limited.

I do recall the caroling caravan that routinely paraded around my old neighborhood when I was a kid. I couldn’t help but wonder what all these people were doing dressed in red hats, passing out stale cookies and miming along to the cheery songs being blasted from the slow-moving truck at their side.

Okay, so maybe I wasn’t quite that oblivious to the reasons for the season. Just because my family preferred latkes and menorahs to ham and pine trees doesn’t mean I wasn’t aware of what was going on. I had (some) Christian friends.

But, once again, I digress. The point is, it’s been a quiet day all around, especially in the basketball world. It’s just too bad that this year’s Christmas Day lineup has devolved into a series of duds.

Not that this reality will stop me from watching games all day—or that it should stop you from tuning in, either.

But before I get too wrapped up in tomorrow’s goings-on, and before all of you dig into your Christmas Eve feasts, let’s see how I’m faring against Grant Rindner’s Ames Black Falcons:

ANALYSIS

I won’t go so far as to say that I’m intimidated by Grant’s team, though the fact that he was able to rush out to such a sizable lead in the scoring column—thanks to Arron Afflalo, Al Jefferson and Nick Young, and without Damian Lillard chiming in—kind of scares me.

Thankfully, points only comprise one category of record. My D-RODs have solid starts in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists, with undaunting deficits in blocks, steals, rebounds and three pointers to overcome.

I’ll clue everyone into the Christmas Day lineups tomorrow morning—another gift to unwrap, if you will.

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday!

ANALYSIS

I’M LEADING JOEL RIGHT NOW! WOOOHOOOO!!!!! TIME TO RIDE THAT TRAIN TO VICTORY TOWN!!!!

Okay, okay, I’ll calm down. It’s only been two days. There’s a lot that can happen between now and Sunday night, and Murphy’s Law has a way of biting my fantasy team in the ass.

Then again, I hit the jackpot with my three fantasy players on Tuesday night. Jameer Nelson logged double-digit assists, despite (or, perhaps, because he was) sharing the Orlando Magic backcourt with Victor Oladipo (on Joel’s team) and Arron Afflalo. Paul Pierce had one of his most efficient and productive games yet as a member of the Brooklyn Nets.

And, last but certainly not least, Nene EXPLODED for a career-high 30 points. Who would’ve thunk he’d ever do that?!

Too bad his big night came at the expense of my sad Los Angeles Lakers, in support of the Washington Wizards’ winning effort. It’s strange, too, that Nene only managed to snag two rebounds. To be fair, he’s never been a great rebounder for a player of his size and strength.

Meanwhile, Anthony Morrow, who Joel tried to dump on me in exchange for Omer Asik, hit just one shot (a three, duh) and added a rebound and a steal for the New Orleans Pelicans. Good thing I turned down the trade, eh?

In any case, I’ll take whatever positive results I can scrounge up. We’ll see later on if I should expect fortune to smile upon me so gracefully on the eve of Thanksgiving.
